Java EE 8 - An instant snapshot (21/5)

Hello JUGgers!

Are you ready for the next event? And ready for a great Java & JVM langs conference this summer in Barcelona? We hope so, we are working hard on that! ;-)

Regarding the next event, we would like to invite you to our next talk focused on the status of Java EE 8 by David Delabassee, the next 21th of May at 7pm at FIB

Java EE 7 has been finalised mid 2013 and from J2EE to Java EE 7, much has changed ... but we are not done yet! Through the years, Java EE has always reinventing itself. Java EE 8 will be no exception to this rule!

In this session, we will look at the current state of Java EE 8. We will review the various new JSRs that will be part of Java EE 8 (e.g. MVC, JSON-B, Security JSR). We will obviously also look how the existing technologies will evolves in Java EE 8 (e.g. Servlet 4 which brings HTTP/2 support, JMS's plan to replace Message Driven Beans, CDI/EJB alignment, JAX-RS 2.1, etc.).

We will finally conclude this discussion by looking at how you can get involved in those works.

David Delabassee is a Software Evangelist working for Oracle; his primary focus is Java on the Server-Side, i.e. Java Enterprise Edition. Prior to Oracle, David spent a decade at Sun Microsystems focusing on Java end-to-end (from the smart card to the high end server), related technologies and developer tools. In his various roles, David has been involved in numerous Java projects since the early days of this technology.

David lives in Belgium. In his spare time, he enjoys playing video games with his daughter and tinkering with technologies such as Java, Home Automation, Electronics and Pinballs. You can find him on Twitter using @delabassee

That's it, remember to get your place through our MeetUp, thanks again to FibAlumni. We hope to see you all at FIB next thursday 21st at 7pm!

Functional programming in Java 8 (20/10)

Hi JUGgers!

Ready to rock this month? We hope so! Get ready, we have nice talks approaching, stay tuned!

Following our talks related to Java8 we would like to invite you to our next talk focused on Functional Programming and Java 8 next 20th of October at 7pm in the auditorium (Building B6) at the Faculty of Computer Science of Barcelona (FIB).

Functional Programming approaches programming as the evaluation of functions that don't alter state or manipulate data. Also, these functions must only generate an output depending on their inputs and must not cause side effects. This derives in a declarative style of programming.

Because Java is (was) imperative, learning to exploit new constructs now available in Java 8 requires a mindshift. Functional Programming is a new paradigm for the average POJO-oriented, Spring-Autowired developer. We will review some of those constructs and then live code a program that uses them.

DISCLAIMER: In this talk we will *not* review Java 8's new syntax nor the Stream API (see for example the talk Stephen Chin gave us about it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTsNNLN2Txk if you are unfamiliar with those).

This talk will be driven by Ignasi Marimon-Clos i Sunyol, a well known Java (now Scala) developer, Software Craftman wannabe and coorganizer of the Scala Developers Barcelona group. Ignasi has a lot of background and experience developing in Java since 2001.

Once again, we have to thank Fib Alumni for their support, for helping us to make this event possible.

Finally, remember to RSVPed as soon as you can, and see you next 20th at FIB!

Java 8 Lambdas and Devices with Stephen Chin (recap)

Hi devs!

The last 14th of april we organized Stephen Chin's talk on Java 8 lambdas and devices, a terrific evening at the Official College of Technical Engineer in Computer Science in Catalonia (COETIC). We had a blast with robots, raspberry-made tablets, and a cute gal RPG character leading a herd of sheeps with the power of Lambdas!

To show us how to use Lambdas, Stephen led us through an incremental series of steps enhancing the funcionality of Mary, the JavaFX sheep herd leader RPG lady of the evening:

Lambdas were used to provide a chain of transformations on the behaviour of Mary and it's herd of sheeps. Treated as a collection of animals, lambdas provided us with the ability to apply filtering, selecting the animals we wanted to affect using reduction algorithms, like this one:
Predicate<SpriteView> pure = a -> a.getColor() == null;mealsServed.set(mealsServed.get() + s.getAnimals().filtered(pure).size());s.getAnimals().removeIf(pure);

Lambdas also served to provide collections of different types to transform our sheeps into chickens with mapping and collector!

Like so:
s.getAnimals().setAll( s.getAnimals()
    .stream()
    .map(SpriteView::getFollowing())
     .map(Chicken::new)
     .collect(Collectors.toList())
 );

All in all, a very informative and practical talk on using lambdas. But that wasn't all there was to it, since we got to see a demo of Duke, the java mindstorm robot, with whom we interacted:

It's all fun and laughs until the lasers come out
Duke was remote-controlled by a java-enhanced Rasperry Pi motherboard.

There was so much more that we did; I encourage you to see the whole thing on our youtube channel or in the Nighthacking website!

We're looking forward to see you on the next event!

Java 8 Lambdas and Devices (14/04) with Stephen Chin

Hi JUGgers!

Our next event will be really special and that's why we are really proud of it.

Next 14th of April, we will have the pleasure to host a talk named "Java 8 Lambdas and Devices" presented by a Java Champion and great speaker: Stephen Chin. For all of you who do not know who is Stephen, let's add few lines of his experience: he is a Java Ambassador at Oracle specializing in embedded and UI technology, co-author of the Pro JavaFX Platform 2 title, and the JavaOne Content Chair. He has been featured at Java conferences around the world including Devoxx, JFokus, OSCON, JFall, GeeCON, JustJava, and JavaOne, where he thrice received a Rock Star Award. Stephen can be followed on twitter @steveonjava, reached via his blog: http://steveonjava.com/, and his hacking adventures can be seen on: http://nighthacking.com/

Stephen is spreading the word about Java 8 in a (crazy?) roadtrip around Europe and Asia and he will stop his motorcycle in Barcelona next monday 14th to speak at our JUG. It will be a pleasure for us! And we are sure it will be an interesting talk for all of you guys.

Related with the abstract, Stephen will talk about Java 8 and why is the most impactful update to the Java ecosystem since Java 5, introducing an entirely new programming model with lambda expressions, and a whole new platform of applications with support for ARM embedded devices.  In this presentation, you will learn how to take advantage of the new lambda-enabled Java 8 APIs including enhanced collections, functional interfaces, and simplified event handlers.  Also, you will see live demonstrations of Java 8 technology running on embedded platforms such as Raspberry Pi and Lego Mindstorms EV3, allowing Java-based applications to support the internet-of-things.

This time we will be hosting the event at the Official College of Technical Engineer in Computer Science in Catalonia (COETIC), based in C. Via Laietana, 39. so thank you for their support and allowing us to use their hall!

That's all folks! We invite all of you to come and learn how to build the future of Java with nice demos next monday 14/04! We will start at 18h so grab this day (and hour) in your calendar, and remember to reserve your seat at MeetUp. There are limited spots!
Register to the Event

Let's rock with Java 8!
