Fast prototyping of Enterprise Cross-Platform Mobile Applications with Java (15 & 16/2)

Hi devs!

Did you know that you can use Java to build cross-platform mobile applications for iOS and Android? And that you can create enterprise applications in a breeze with tools like Gluon Mobile and Gluon CloudLink? Learn about fast prototyping and development of Java applications on mobile, using your Java skills, IDEs and Gluon open source and commercial tools.

Thanks to José Pereda in this session we will revisit the state of the latest developments (JDK, Gluon VM, JavaFX) and see how we can build applications with one cross-platform Java API and deploy to mobile platforms, with compelling UI, native services integration, and seamlessly connection with the cloud and enterprise back-end, taking profit from improved security and common mobile features such as push notifications, authentication, data synchronization or persistency, among others.

José Pereda, PhD in Structural Engineering, works as a software engineer at Gluon Software and he is a Java Champion, Oracle Groundbreaker Ambassador and JavaOne RockStar. Being on Java since 1999, he is a JavaFX advocate, developing Java applications for mobile and embedded platforms connected to the cloud and enterprise systems, while he also works on open source projects (OpenJFX, FXyz3D), co-authoring JavaFX books (JavaFX 8 Introduction by Example, JavaFX 9 by Example), blogging, tweeting (@JPeredaDnr) or speaking at JUGs and conferences (JavaOne, Devoxx, JAX, Jfokus, JavaLand, JCrete, JBCNConf,…). José lives with his family in Valladolid, Spain.

Oh! We almost forgot, if you are interested, note that the next day (Saturday) we will run a hands-on workshop to hack & play with these technologies for a while! Here it is: https://www.meetup.com/es-ES/BarcelonaJUG/events/258506815/

Thank you one more time to Everis and their Living lab! They will provide the venue for hosting the event and some food and drinks to have some networking after the session.

Remember to book your seat & happy coding!

Microservices development with Lagom

Hi devs !!!
Although we are finishing all the details for the JBCNConf , the JVM conference, that takes place next 19th of June, we don't stop organising events that we hope you will find interesting, with great speakers like Ignasi.
This time we've been lucky to host an event by Ignasi Marimon, about micro services and the Lagom framework next Thursday 8th of June at Ocado Technology offices.

"One microservice is not microservice, they come in systems" Jonas Bonér. With that premise in mind, Lagom is a framework that enables microservice-based systems development heavy-lifting the issues implicit in a microservices system. This session will be a 3 hour workshop where we'll review some opinions that affected the design of Lagom and we will also create a basic multi-service application. Please make sure to bring your laptop to follow along.
This is a hands-on workshop which requires some initial setup. Please follow the Getting Started guide for Java/sbt in the docs to make sure your machine is fully setup.
As we have a limited space for this workshop, please register in our Meetup event.

Hands on performance workshop (25/5)

Hi JUGgers!

Our Java & JVM Barcelona conference is almost there, but we are not going to stop just because of it, right? ;-)

One year ago we had a talk about Performance on the JVM, do you remember? Well, we thought that it was good to move on with the basics and play a little bit with software in order to settle all the concepts. That's the main reason behind this workshop, hope you will enjoy it ;-)

This introductory workshop will be driven by Galo Navarro, Guillermo Ontañón and Duarte Nunes and it is designed for developers who can write Java, Scala or any other JVM language, but have zero practical experience on performance analysis. After this workshop you'll take away hands on experience using diagnostic tools, profilers and writing micro benchmarks based on practical examples, all of which you can start applying on real projects.

The workshop will be very hands on so it's strongly advised that attendants are able to bring and use a laptop (preferably Linux or OSX.) ready to build Java projects.

About our speakers, Galo is a software engineer focused on scalability and distributed systems, mostly on the JVM. Currently working in Engineering Productivity at Schibsted, pior to that he implemented virtual networks at Midokura and social networks at Tuenti and Last.fm.

Guillermo is a software engineer specialized in systems / network / concurrent / distributed development on Linux. Java, Scala,C, C++, Python currenly working as a Staff Software Engineer in Schibsted Media Group.

Duarte Nunes is a Software Engineer working on ScyllaDB, where he develops a high performance, distributed database. He has a background in concurrent programming, distributed systems and low-latency software.

Finally, we have to thank once again to New Relic, because they have offered to host the event, and also they are going to invite us to some beers and pizzas! Thank you!

Nothing more, remember to RSVPed your seat and see you next 25th!

PS1: There are not too much free spots because this is a workshop and because of that it is not possible to have a large audience following it. Please, think twice if you are not able to come and free your spot.

PS2: Do not worry, we will announce soon the details about the pre-requisites you need in order to run the workshop smooth ;-)

Hands-on Session : TDD in baby steps

Hi devs !!!!
We are not stopping at all !!!!! ( buffffffff ), now we come with an amazing workshop by Sandro Mancuso about TDD, next Wednesday March 8th.
Committing fast and often helps us focus on the behaviour of your system and allows for the design to incrementally emerge. It takes a lot of discipline to make your red-green-refactor cycles as small as possible so that you can commit often.

This exercise puts a time constraint of 2 minutes between every commit and if your tests fail when each two minute session is up then you must revert everything up to the last commit. It's guaranteed to frustrate you in the beginning, as it did frustrated us, but you'll be surprised how quickly you start getting used to it.

You'll need a version control system and language of your choice. Git is quite straightforward for this exercise but you can use your favourite. The actual Kata Problem will be introduced at the start of the session.
We also want to mention the Open House event that Codurance will have on March 6th in its offices : https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/codurance-barcelona-career-open-house-tickets-32039652463  For developers who are looking for autonomy, mastery and purpose. Codurance Barcelona Open House next Monday 6th March at 18:30 at Codurance Office in Barcelona, Carrer Arago, 208 5th floor.
Sandro Mancuso, software craftsman, author, and founder of the London Software Craftsmanship Community (LSCC). Sandro has been coding since a very young age but only started his professional career in 1996. He has worked for startups, software houses, product companies, international consultancy companies, and investment banks. During his career Sandro had the opportunity to work in a good variety of projects, with different languages, technologies, and across many different industries. Sandro has a lot of experience in bringing the Software Craftsmanship ideology and Extreme Programming practices to organisations of all sizes. Sandro is internationally renowned by his work on evolving and spreading Software Craftsmanship and is frequently invited to speak in many conferences around the world. His professional aspiration is to raise the bar of the software industry by helping developers become better at and care more about their craft.
Hope to see you there !!!!!

Intro to Couchbase + workshop (21 & 22/11)

Hi JUGgers!

Ready to attend to some nice events? We hope so, because are some of you may know, we are organizing a few those days. So, here we are!

This week we will have the pleasure to receive the visit of the Couchbase team.

And because of that we have organized a talk this friday 21th, at 7pm at in the auditorium (Building B6) at the Faculty of Computer Science of Barcelona (FIB) and the next, as usual, we will host a workshop in La Fontana on saturday, starting at 10'15am.

The talk on friday will be a general introduction to Couchbase. You know you need a NoSQL database. You might not know why right now, but deep down you know you need one. While hype might be a common factor for choosing NoSQL, there are also some very good reasons too :) So we'll try to wrap our head around this. In this talk we'll see where Couchbase comes from and how it fits in the NoSQL ecosystem. Then we'll go through its architecture and newest features like Couchbase Mobile and N1QL.

Next day, the saturday we will host a workshop, when we will be playing on Couchbase Server with the Java SDK 2.0. Couchbase recently released the 2.0 version of its Java SDK. It provides functionality to store and retrieve your documents to and from a Couchbase Server cluster through synchronous and asynchronous (reactive) interfaces - and it even has support for Java 8.

In this workshop we will build a simple Java app making use of this cool reactive API. Ah! Remember to bring your laptop for the workshop (of course, with a Java dev environment + Couchbase Server 3.0).

In fact Laurent Doguin will be driven both sessions. Laurent is a Paris based Developer Advocate where he focuses on helping Java developers and the French community. He writes code in Java and blog post in Markdown. Prior to joining Couchbase he was Nuxeo's community liaison where he devoted his time and expertise to helping the entire Nuxeo Community become more active and efficient.

That's all folks! Remember to RSVPed for both days (talk and workshop).

Enjoy playing with noSQL!

Coding Dojo, kata de iniciación (17/10)

Hola JUGers!

What is OSGi and why and how I should consider it for my projects

Hi devs !!!!    here we are again :)

We hope you enjoyed your vacations and that your expectations were fulfilled . ;)

To start the new season we have a great presentation with a workshop.

Next 12th of September in Mobile World Center we will be hosting a day event about OSGi, and the next day, the 13th of September we will host a workshop in La Fontana.

In this presentation we will answer to the question "What is OSGi and why and how I should consider it for my projects?" , getting information on OSGi specifications and working with one container : Apache Karaf.

Apache Karaf is now one of the most popular OSGi containers. It provide a very lightweight, powerful and enterprise ready container, allowing you to easily and quickly deploy your applications, especially the OSGi ones.

During the first session, you will have a complete overview of Karaf, and its features. You will see the shell console in action, the provisioning mechanism using Karaf Features, the security layer providing RBAC support, etc.

During the second session, the workshop, we will create a complete enterprise level OSGi application by leveraging the different layers provided by Karaf.

The presentation will be given by Jean-Baptiste Onofré. He is an ASF member and committer of Apache Karaf, Apache ServiceMix, Apache ACE, Apache Camel, Apache Archiva, Apache Kalumet, Apache Falcon, Apache Syncope and mentor on Apache Sirona.

Jean-Baptiste brings over ten years of development experience to Talend, where he works as a SOA/Software Architect. Also is the author of book "Learning Apache Cellar" .

To properly participate in the workshop would be great if you have downloaded , and installed, these libraries and software :

Don't miss this event !!!!!!!!!!!! See you there :)

Resistance is Futile, Mocks Will Be Assimilated [Workshop] (25/04)

Hi community!

How were the holidays? We hope you have a nice time and enjoy it.

So, here we are, ready for our next event, this friday 25th and this time we will be focused in testing and mock objects and playing with some great tools about these topics driven by Alex Soto.

Let's think a little about testing. Everybody is mocking in unit test. To test what? Your code will be run within a Java EE container. Let's start writing fast real tests.

Are you confident enough to push your application to production without fear? Will it run correctly with all components? Keep the fail whale at bay? Confidence comes from writing real tests.
In this workshop we are going to see how some tools like Arquillian, Byteman, NoSQLUnit or Moco and other programs, may help us writing real tests in situations where you typically would use mocks.

Come to this workshop and learn how to write faster and more effectively tests!

Here is the script of the event:

- Some Theory
  • What are and what happens with mocks?
  • Are there alternatives?
  • Mocks, stubs and fakes
  • Explanation of typical scenarios where mocks are used: Business Layer, Data Layer, External Services Layer, UI Layer
- Engage!!!
  • Writing real tests in Business Layer with Arquillian
  • Writing real tests for External Services Layer.
  • Writing real tests for Ajax-Enabled UI applications under different browsers (including Mobile ones)
  • The Cloud
- Conclusions

These are the requirements for this workshop:
As we have mentioned, this workshop will be driven by Alex Soto. Alex is a software engineer specialized in enterprise technologies, test automation and continuous delivery based on the Java platform. He has over a decade of experience in the Java world, yet continually renews his skill set by learning new aptitudes and technologies every day. Moreover he is involved in the open source world in projects like NoSQLUnit, Asciidoctor or Arquillian. He is an international speaker, presenting his talks at software conferences like Devoxx, LinuxTag, Codemotion, Guatemala JavaDays, JavaLand or GeeCon.

That's all guys, just remember to reserve your seat at MeetUp and come this friday 25th at 7pm at our usual place, La Fontana. Ah! Do not worry about the language, this workshop won't be in english ;-)

See you this friday!

Saludos!

BCN } JUG Workgroups - Social

¡Hi Devs!

AWS workshop / Battlefield with CAPSiDE (15/02)

Hi devops!

  1. Presentación de AWS
  2. Servicios EC2
Conceptos básicos de virtualización, tipos de instancia, ciclo de vida, easy came easy goes
  3. Amazon Machine
Creación de AMIs personalizadas, personalización vs flexibilidad, etc
  4. Escalabilidad vertical
Diferencias de rendimiento, ventajas, outages, precio
  5. Escalabilidad horizontal
    Caso de éxito: Animoto
    ¡Café!
  6. Launch configuration
Crearemos una plantilla para lanzar instancias
  7. Autoscaling groups
Definiremos cuántas máquinas compondrán nuestra flota
  8. Elastic Load Balancers
