Lazy Java - Mario Fusco (18/01)

Hi devs !!!

We continue this year 2018 with a great speaker Mario Fusco and a very interesting topic : lazyness ( a purpose for this new year ? ;) )

Like all imperative languages Java is, with some minor but notable exceptions, an eagerly evaluated programming language. Nevertheless the introduction of lambdas in Java 8 also allowed the adoption of some lazy patterns and data structures that are more typically employed in functional languages. Streams represent the most evident example of how also native Java API has taken advantage of laziness, but there is a number of other interesting scenarios where laziness can be an effective solution to quite common problems. In fact laziness is the only possible technique to process potentially infinite amount of data, or more in general to delay the expensive evaluation of an expression only when and if it is necessary. But laziness is even more than that: for instance the reader monad delays not only a computation but also the need of external dependencies thus lowering the abuse of dependency injection, while a trampoline uses laziness to delay and then linearize recursive calls preventing the overflow of the stack. The purpose of this talk is illustrating why and how implementing laziness in Java with practical examples delivered with both slides and live coding sessions.

Mario is a senior software engineer at Red Hat working at the development of the core of Drools, the JBoss rule engine. He has a huge experience as Java developer having been involved in (and often leading) many enterprise level projects in several industries ranging from media companies to the financial sector. Among his interests there are also functional programming and Domain Specific Languages. By leveraging these 2 passions he created the open source library lambdaj with the purposes of providing an internal Java DSL for manipulating collections and allowing a bit of functional programming in Java. He is also a Java Champion and the co-author of "Java 8 in Action" published by Manning.

Hope you can make it and we can finally meet there.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

This year to prevent the no-show effect for those people that register and never come and to avoid problems to our sponsors ( buying food for not present people ) and to us ( searching for bigger rooms ), we'll charge 2 EUR to everyone registering and we will give back that amount for those that really attend the event.

Don't forget to register

Happy coding

Microservices development with Lagom

Hi devs !!!
Although we are finishing all the details for the JBCNConf , the JVM conference, that takes place next 19th of June, we don't stop organising events that we hope you will find interesting, with great speakers like Ignasi.
This time we've been lucky to host an event by Ignasi Marimon, about micro services and the Lagom framework next Thursday 8th of June at Ocado Technology offices.

"One microservice is not microservice, they come in systems" Jonas Bonér. With that premise in mind, Lagom is a framework that enables microservice-based systems development heavy-lifting the issues implicit in a microservices system. This session will be a 3 hour workshop where we'll review some opinions that affected the design of Lagom and we will also create a basic multi-service application. Please make sure to bring your laptop to follow along.
This is a hands-on workshop which requires some initial setup. Please follow the Getting Started guide for Java/sbt in the docs to make sure your machine is fully setup.
As we have a limited space for this workshop, please register in our Meetup event.
Register !!!

Ignasi Marimón a well known developer, Software Craftman wannabe and coorganizer of the Scala Developers Barcelona group. Ignasi has a lot of background and experience developing in Java since 2001.

Walkmod, convenciones de código automáticas

Hola devs !!!

Mocks, Stubs, Fakes. What Else?

Hi devs !!!!
Here we are again, with a new event and in this case it's about Testing :)
-- This event will be done in January 2016 but we dont still have the concrete date.--

Through the use of build pipelines, Continuous Delivery will enable faster and more frequent build, test and deployment cycles of software.
To ensure that what you are delivering has the required quality: how do we build a continuous delivery pipeline in the real world and how do we correctly implement tests?

Our friend Alex Soto, from CloudBees, will be speaking about testing and the different techniques we can use ( mocking, stubbing, faking... ).
In this session we are going to focus only in the first stage of a CD pipeline, the commit stage. This first stage is really important since it must be executed fast and should provide quick feedback regarding any failure. Doing this well means faster application releases with higher quality.

Come to this session to learn how unit tests can help you on this stage, how and when to use mocks, stubs or fakes and a brief touch in mock 2.0. Also we are going to identify some problems that these techniques have and how we can fix it.
Finally we are going to see how Jenkins acts as the director of the whole process.
In this event we'll be using the facilities of Netcentric where we can have beers and a good networking time after the presentation ( office interior in Google maps ).

Enjoy this event and not forget to register in our meetup :)

Cassandra & Java + Cassandra y Spark para el Internet of Things (29/1)

Hello JUGgers!

Html5, AngularJS, Groovy, Java and MongoDB all together – what could go wrong? (24/11)

Hello again JUGgers!

Ready for another great talk? We hope so, because next monday 24th at 7pm again, in the auditorium (Building B6) at the Faculty of Computer Science of Barcelona (FIB), we will host an incredible talk, if you do not believe it, look at the name: Html5, AngularJS, Groovy, Java and MongoDB all together – what could go wrong? by Trisha Gee.

We must say that it seems to have been a common theme amongst startups to create the MVP (Minimum Viable Product) in a language that facilitates rapid prototyping (for example Ruby), and then migrate to the JVM when the application has proved itself and requires more in terms of stability and performance.

Trisha will demonstrate us that it’s possible to use a static, boiler-plate-heavy language like Java to create a web application in under an hour, in front of your very eyes. The JVM is a true polyglot platform, and she will show us how to use the correct tools for each part of your application, including: AngularJS, Bootstrap, HTML 5, Web Services, Java-the-language, MongoDB and Groovy - a fully buzz-word-compliant application. While she won’t go into every technology in depth, she will demonstrate the role of each tool and how they interact.

At the end of the talk we will have a fully working mobile-and-browser-friendly application, without compromising on design or good practice... It’s even going to have tests!

Yes, live coding, with all attendant danger.

So it seems to be a great talk, don't you think so? ;-)

For any of you who do not know anything about Trisha, let us say  that she has developed Java applications for a range of industries, including finance, manufacturing and non-profit, for companies of all sizes. She has expertise in Java high performance systems, is passionate about enabling developer productivity, and right now is getting to grips with working in an Open Source fashion as a developer for MongoDB Inc, where she contributes to the Java driver and Morphia. Trisha blogs regularly on subjects that she thinks developers and other humans should care about, she’s a leader of the Sevilla Java & MongoDB User Groups, a key member of the London Java Community and a Java Champion - she believes we shouldn't all have to make the same mistakes again and again.

That's all folks, come and join us next monday at FIB!

Reflection Madness (4/11)

Hi JUGgers!

What is OSGi and why and how I should consider it for my projects

Hi devs !!!!    here we are again :)

We hope you enjoyed your vacations and that your expectations were fulfilled . ;)

To start the new season we have a great presentation with a workshop.

Next 12th of September in Mobile World Center we will be hosting a day event about OSGi, and the next day, the 13th of September we will host a workshop in La Fontana.

In this presentation we will answer to the question "What is OSGi and why and how I should consider it for my projects?" , getting information on OSGi specifications and working with one container : Apache Karaf.

Apache Karaf is now one of the most popular OSGi containers. It provide a very lightweight, powerful and enterprise ready container, allowing you to easily and quickly deploy your applications, especially the OSGi ones.

During the first session, you will have a complete overview of Karaf, and its features. You will see the shell console in action, the provisioning mechanism using Karaf Features, the security layer providing RBAC support, etc.

During the second session, the workshop, we will create a complete enterprise level OSGi application by leveraging the different layers provided by Karaf.

The presentation will be given by Jean-Baptiste Onofré. He is an ASF member and committer of Apache Karaf, Apache ServiceMix, Apache ACE, Apache Camel, Apache Archiva, Apache Kalumet, Apache Falcon, Apache Syncope and mentor on Apache Sirona.

Jean-Baptiste brings over ten years of development experience to Talend, where he works as a SOA/Software Architect. Also is the author of book "Learning Apache Cellar" .

To properly participate in the workshop would be great if you have downloaded , and installed, these libraries and software :

Don't miss this event !!!!!!!!!!!! See you there :)

Eclipse Luna DemoCamp (23/7)
